Holiday Gifting: Gifts For The Homebody

rev-xmas.jpg

Personally I don’t think its ever too early to start getting into the holiday spirit.  My husband would disagree but he knows when to pick his battles.  So yes, the tree is up and I have started my holiday shopping.  I love to get an early start on my shopping; in fact, my goal is to finish up by Dec 1.  This way I can avoid the December shopping madness.  I don’t do well with crowds and line-ups, especially with two kids in tow.  I can’t say I am always successful in meeting that goal and I am very thankful for amazon prime but nonetheless I am usually in full swing gift buying mode come November.

So here is some holiday gifting inspiration for those of you looking to get a head start.

This first Holiday post covers gift ideas for the Homebody.  That gal who loves her nights in and I am definitely one of those gals.  There is nothing I love more than a night in, cozied up on the couch with my favourite wine under a warm blanket – my kind of Saturday night.

These gifts work on their own or they would be great put together as a themed gift basket.  Click any image to buy.

1.READING SOCKS

I live in these.  I wear them around the house all the time.  This pom pom pair is on my wish list list this year.  And last Christmas I was gifted the sherpa lined pair featured in the pic above.  I loved them so much that I went back after boxing day and picked up two more pairs.  They were like 50% off during boxing week.

3. BEAUTY SAMPLERS

These are such a great way to try out more luxe products before you buy them.

This mask sampler by Peter Thomas Roth is also on my wish list.  In fact this was on last year’s wish list but it sold out early so I haven’t had a chance to try it out yet.  My husband clearly didn’t get the memo about starting his shopping early last year.  I guess I will continue to drop some more not so subtle hints.  Fingers crossed I find these in my stocking.

The mascara sampler from Shoppers is my all time favourite buy during the holidays.  I usually just buy it for myself early November because it sells out fast. And for $42 it’s great value – not only are there 7 mini mascaras to try BUT there is also a coupon to get your favourite from the sampler pack in a full size.

This sampler from Sephora is less than $50 and includes 7 of their top selling highlighters.  Who doesn’t need a little more glow.

4. COZY THROW

A cozy throw is an essential for  a night in.  There are so many great options right now.  I love the thick knit options but they can be so expensive so these sweater knit ones are a great alternative.  These are from Bed Bath & Beyond but I have also seen some cute ones at HomeSense.  The throw in my living room pic above also came from HomeSense.

I love this Pottery Barn Buffalo Check option as well.  AND 50% of the proceeds of each purchase are donated to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital®, helping to support research and treatment for childhood cancer and other life-threatening diseases.

5. TREATS

A night in isn’t complete without your favourite treat.  I am loving these barkTHINS at the moment.  And chocolate pretzels are always a hit.  I found these great gluten free ones.  Perfect stocking stuffers.

Its All in the Details – Sweater Edition

img_9745.jpgIMG_9796

As much as I love cozying up in a good chunky knit, I find that sweaters can get sort of boring which is why I am loving the all the little details and embellishments this Fall. From fringe, pom poms and lace ups to pearls and embroidery, this season its all about the details.

In fact next week I might attempt to get my DIY on – adding embellishments to some of last seasons sweaters.  I will be sure to share a step by step when I do.

But for now I am sharing my favourite embellished sweaters.  All images are linked.  The sweater above is from Marshalls so I can not link to it.

1. Pom Poms: Zara

This first sweater is from Zara.  It also comes in white with a grey pom pom but I prefer the subtlety of the tone on tone blue.

2. Pocket Detail – Zara

I just ordered this one.  Its got a great faux fur detailing on the pocket.  If you are looking for a bit of colour it also comes in pink.

3. Lace-Up Bell Sleeve – Nordstrom

I linked to the website for this little number but I usually find its cheaper in store. I love the flowy fit on this.

4, Faux Pearls – Zara

This cropped style can be dressed up or down.  It would look cute with a pair of high waisted distressed girlfriend jeans or polished for the office with a midi pencil skirt or wide leg trousers.  It took everything in my power to not add this to my cart but the pearls just do not seem practical for this mom.  I envision small hands picking off pearls one by one.

5. Ruffled Sleeve – H&M

And I still love a good ruffle so I included this ruffle sleeve sweatshirt from H&M.  Its only $25.  Also comes in powder blue which I am loving.

Layering Your Dresses

IMG_9470

IMG_9349IMG_9352IMG_9375IMG_9469

One of my go to looks this Fall has been pairing a mini dress with a pair of distressed jeans and a cardi  Why, you ask?

It’s comfortable √

It conveniently covers my butt when picking up tantrum throwing toddler

And it extends the life of my summer dresses

Side note:  this was also my go to look during the last few months of pregnancy this summer – minus the cardi.  It was was too hot to wear anything but flowy dresses but my belly made all my dresses way too short.  So this was the perfect solution.

The dress I am wearing is from Zara.  It comes in chambray and olive as well as black. And the jeans are from The GAP.  I have never loved GAP denim, it just doesn’t fit me right but these are GAP Maternity which I loved throughout my second pregnancy.  And yes, I admit I am still rocking my maternity jeans. I loved these and am not ready to give them up and honestly I am just not quite fitting back into my old jeans.

Here are some of my favourite mini dresses for layering with your denim this fall. In fact, I just put the embroidered collar and the mustard shirt dress into my Zara cart.  And I bought the frayed collar dress this summer from Forever 21 – its great quality for Forever 21.

SPANX Faux Leather Leggings

SPANX faux leather leggings

Okay so these leggings are a dream.  I still love my Aritzia leggings but these are winning right now because they are so great postpartum.  They are a little higher waisted than the Aritzia leggings and the compression is great – as one would expect from SPANX. They are a little pricey but worth it.  I picked mine up at Nordstrom on sale in the summer for $78.  Right now you can get them full price at The Bay for $108 and given the magic these leggings can do for your mid section I think its totally worth the investment.

SPANX - faux leather leggings

I have the basic faux leather pair but they also have a new pair this season with moto detailing.  I am definitely adding these to my shopping list too. The moto pair is a little more at $122 and can also be found at The Bay.

The sweater is from Winners.  Its the softest mohair.

Five of My Fav Ankle Boots for Fall

Sure sweaters are nice but for me its all about the ankle boot.  They are absolutely my favourite thing about fall, besides the mini chocolate bars meant for Halloween.  They really start selling those boxes of mini chocolates way too early  At our house we must go through 3 boxes before we even get to Halloween.  No self control.  I guess self control is also an issue when it comes to shoe shopping for me.  I can’t pass up a deal.

That said, I have rounded up my top five favourite ankle boots for Fall, all of which are on sale. Most of them well under $100.  And I included a couple options for toddlers as well – they are just so cute I can’t resist.

Right now The Bay is having a great sale so most of my picks are from The Bay.  And yes, I ordered all of these…..

One: The Bay – Sam Edelman Studded Booties $90

Love the buckle detail on these and of course the low block heel which is mandatory for carting around a newborn and a 2 year old.

Two: The Bay – Dotted Rain Booties $64

A super practical option.  And cute.  Love a good polka dot.

cougar-rain-bootie.jpg

Three:  The Bay – Leopard Lucky Brand Booties $115

Leopard print is less practical, but I really think I will be able to wear these with alot of my outfits.  Perfect with a sweater and ripped girlfriend jeans.

Four:  The Bay – Sleek Cut Outs $63

I love the simplicity of these.  So sleek. They come in black and grey.

Five:  DSW:  Studded Bucked Boot – $79.99

I also picked up a cute pair of studded booties last month at DSW which are now on clearance for $79.99 online (probably cheaper in store). Somewhat similar to last season’s Chloe.  I’m in love with the Chloe from last season but I don’t have $1500+ to spend on shoes.  Maybe one day.

And for your littles

Old Navy has a couple cute boot options for littles as well.  I picked up both of these for Ruby.  Old Navy is 40% off online right now so they are both under $20.

Meow.  Kind of wish they came in my size.

Old Navy – Polka Dot Combat Boot

Love the blue and pink combo, plus I am a sucker for dots.

It’s All About The Details

check-pant-2

The waistband detail on these pants is amazing.  When I first saw these I almost didn’t pick them up because I assumed they wouldn’t suit my shape (I have never had the flattest tummy so I am always looking for ways to disguise it).   You wouldn’t think the extra bulk around the waist would be flattering but it is. The asymmetric waistband is really high and the extra fabric on the waistband helps hide any extra little ‘bits’. The over-sized sweater helps with that too.

These pants are from Winners, like many of the pieces in my closet.  So while you won’t find them in stores today, this post is really all about taking a bit of risk when shopping. Basics, like these trousers, don’t have to be boring.  Look for special details to keep things interesting. And don’t assume something wont look good on you, just give it a try. Especially at stores like Winners where the racks are full of surprises.  For me, I do best at Winners when I take EVERYTHING to the fitting rooms (yes I am that girl) even if I am not entirely sure about it.

Shoes and necklace are also from Winners.

DIY “Bow” Ring

bow-rings-1bow-rings-2

The other day I was inspired by my daughter’s hair bow.  One of the many bows that I keep trying to clip into her hair, only to have them ripped out seconds later.  Its a battle. Sure they look cute and all but her hair is really starting to get unruly.

Anyways, her loss is my gain.  Check out my new rings.  I started with the bigger black bow but then made a few more smaller ones.  Below is a brief tutorial on how to make one yourself.  Its really pretty simple.

Materials:

  • A ring, just a cheap one because it won’t really be visible.  I bought a set of stackable rings at the Bay for less than $5, link below.
  • Needle and thread to match the bow.
  • A bow.  I bought mine at Claires.  Usually you can get some sort of BOGO deal so it ends up being pretty cheap. I would recommend keeping it simple in terms of the bow you pick, otherwise it may end up looking a little cheese.  I included some options in the link below.

SHOP    Rings Polka Dot Bow  Plaid Bow   Striped Bow

Step 1: I started with a bow that was already on a clip, so I just cut the fabric on the underside of the bow to remove the clip.

Step 2: I sewed the back of the bow up to fix where I had made cut.

Step 3: I sewed the bow to the ring.  If you are looking at the backside of the bow place the ring where you want it to sit on the bow.  And then you just stitch ‘around’ the ring going from top to bottom.  I included a pic below in case my description is confusing.  Leave a comment if you need more detail.

1 Jacket 3 Looks

jacket-dress-1Yep, more Zara.  This jacket is so versatile and to prove it I am showing you 3 completely different looks – starring this jacket.  Unfortunately this jacket is sold out but I found a similar one from TopShop (only $85).  Actually, I think I like the TopShop one more than this, c’est la vie.

SHOP    Similar Jacket from TopShop

ONE:  This jacket is perfect for layering over a dress.  I prefer it with a dress shorter than the jacket.  In fact the dress I am wearing is super short, too short for me, so I liked how the jacket gave me a little extra coverage.

BTW, I found these shoes at Nordstrom.  I just checked and they are sold out BUT If ever you order from Nordstrom Canada, you can avoid paying shipping and duties if you order in store or call customer service.  I have only ordered  instore but the gentleman helping me said you just needed the order number to place the order over the phone. jacket-dress-3jacket-dress-2

TWO:  Probably not the best look for a -20C sort of day.  But on a warmer winter day, the jacket works as an outer layer as well.  I get so bored of my winter jackets so layering blazers over warmer layers helps mix if up.  Also, I am not sure if the sleeves are meant to be three quarter because I have really long arms.  Seriously, they span 6 feet and I am only 5’7. Anyways I love that the sweater sleeves are longer than the jacket sleeves.  You can easily achieve this layered look by cuffing your sleeves as well.

jacket-outerwear-2jacket-outerwear-4

THREE:  Finally this jacket is totally work appropriate.  I wore a pale pink shirt with a bow detail, but it would look great with a black blouse as well. OR even a simple grey or black tee depending on how casual your work place is.  My office is super casual so I would probably switch the black ankle pants for a pair of jeans.

“Bow”tiful

If you have kids, you likely know this is a Wiggles reference.  We watch Wiggles almost every day with Ruby, so I couldn’t help myself.

I am going to show you three ways to be “bow”tiful – aka accessorize with a simple ribbon. It’s a really simple way to make an item in your closet feel fresh again.

ONE: Use a ribbon to tie a small bow around a blouse.  Here I am wearing a collarless blouse but it looks great on a collared blouse too.  I like to use a long ribbon so the ends flow pretty long.  You can also try it with a more narrow ribbon for a more understated look.bow-2bow-2b

TWO: In this next look I wanted to add a little drama to my outfit.  I started with a pair of skinny leather pants and an oversized sweater –  a pretty basic look.  Then I added a statement necklace and tied the ribbon to the back of the necklace taking a basic outfit to something that could work for a night out.bow3bow3b

THREE:  Lastly, I used the ribbon as a choker, tying a bow at the back leaving long strands flowing.  I wore it with a black dress so it looked like part of the dress.  But it would work with a dress or tee of a contrasting colour too.  A white dress with a black ribbon would look super cool.  I also like this look best with a v-neck.  A thicker choker with a round neck can feel a little busy.  bow1bbow1

Zara Sale – Can’t Stop……

checked-coat-zara-1

This jacket was a major score from Zara this week for only $60. To be honest I have gone a little nuts at Zara the last month.  I really need to take a bit of a shopping break and work with what I have,  at least until Spring.

Anyhow,  I love that this menswear inspired jacket is super oversized. I wore my faux leather leggings from Aritzia.  They are really high waisted and have tons of spandex in the tummy area.  Super slimming.

As for the shirt, its from Zara too.  Its a basic long sleeve pocket tee with a ruffle at the bottom. It comes in black, rose and olive.  And its only $12 on sale at Zara right now.

And I dug these boots out from the back of my closet – they were a Winners score from a least 5 years ago.  They remind me of something you might have seen on Anne of Green Gables. But nonetheless I think they look super cool with these leggings.
