What To Wear For A Girls Night Out. When You Are 40.

Someone recently asked me for some tips on what to wear to a 40th birthday celebration in NYC. At first I thought it was an easy enough question but it got me thinking about some of the style changes I have gone through in the years leading up to this milestone birthday. Of course you want to look and feel fabulous at 40 but fabulous now probably looks and feels alot different than it did 10 years ago.

Sure, you want pieces that are fashionable and trendy but ultimately it’s about knowing what you look and feel good in, knowing what areas of your body you are comfortable showing off and what you maybe want to conceal.  And sticking to it.  There is nothing worse than buying some trendy piece that just doesn’t work for your body type –  it either sits in your closet unworn, or you wear it and end up fidgeting with it and feeling less than fabulous all night long.

Anyhow, I have included a few different ideas for inspiration below.

LOOK #1: Lingerie Inspired Camis

A really cute look for a girls night out is a lingerie inspired cami.  Because these tops are so bare on top, I often like to cover up my bottom half a little more..  I love wearing a pretty cami with distressed denim and pair of mules.   Plus the cami is a great layering piece as we move into Fall to wear with a cardigan.  Here are a few camis I am loving right now, all under $50.

BTW I typically wear my camis with a pretty bralette with thin straps, because I just can’t deal with a strapless bra.

night-out-lingerie-inspired1.png1. TopShop Scallop Cami.  Nordstrom| It comes in pink and white too but I love this yellow colour.  And its only $25.

2. Button Down Cami.  TopShop at The Bay | This will be a perfect layering piece for Fall/Winter and its only $38.

3. Pleated Lace Cami.  The Bay. | This clearance find at $26 is so pretty with the pleating and ruffle detail.

4. Striped Lace Trim Cami.  Zara | $40 | This would also look great under a black blazer with either denim of leather pants.

5. Lingerie Inspired Tank.  Zara.  $50 | the lace and the shape on this is so feminine.

LOOK #2: Bow Tie Shorts

I also love wearing a pair of shorts with heels (love an ankle strap) for a night out.  Right now there are so many cute high waisted shorts with bow tie belts which are really flattering.  You can pair them with a body suit if you want a more fitted look on top, but I often like to wear a looser top tucked in just at the front – its more comfortable especially for a night out when food is involved.

1. Mustard Shorts Paperbag Shorts.  Zara.  $40 | This colour would look beautiful with a blue and white striped tee. And I would wear it with these mustard coloured bow mules.  I love a monochromatic look.

2. Vegan Leather Shorts.  Shopbop | $120.  Bit a of a splurge but I’ve had my faux leather shorts (similar pair) for 3 years now, maybe 4, and I still wear them often.  And they are great to wear into Fall with a pair of booties.

3. Striped Paper Bag Shorts.  Zara.  $40 |I wear these all the time. I have a horizontal striped tee with ruffle sleeves that I love to wear with these.  And for a night out I throw on a pair of yellow heels.  I love blue and yellow together.

There is also a similar pair at The Bay for $30 on clearance.

4. Checked Paperbag Shorts.  Nordstrom.

Currently Crushing On: Yellow

yellow header

I have always loved the colour yellow.  In fact, I looked for months to find my the perfect yellow dress for my school prom.  I may even still have it – more than 20 years later.  But yellow isn’t just for summer ladies, it’s actually a great colour to wear into Fall.  Just add a pair of brown booties and a cardi.

Here are some of my fav yellow pieces right now.  And I am sure in the coming months as stores stock up on Fall gear, I will have more yellow to share.

1. Wrap Midi Dress.  Nordstrom. |This dress is such a beautiful shape and would be so flattering.  It looks great with a nude pair of heels as pictured, but you could also add a little edge with black booties.

2. Square Toe Pumps with Block Heel.  Zara | Such a classic shape with the square toe and block heel.  And only $80.

3. Leather Slingbacks. Zara |  I haven’t worn slingbacks since the eighties, but these feel so right.

4. Mules With Bow Detail.  Zara |  Cant beat a pair of shoes for less than $50.  This mustard shade of yellow looks amazing with jeans.

5. Straight Cut Blazer.  Zara. | I love this muted yellow to wear with denim.  And this is less than $50.

6. TopShop Cropped Pants.  Nordstrom.  Only $50.

7. Off The Should Eyelet Dress.  Zara | Add a jean jacket or a cozy cardi and a pair of booties (like these) and this dress will take you well into Fall.

Nordstrom Canada Anni Sale 2018

I know everybody and their sister is talking about the Nordtrom Anniversary Sale right now on social media so I thought I would share a slightly different take. Lets be honest, Nordstrom Canada does not have a great online shopping experience.  Mostly due to the  large fees  for shipping and customs/handling. But they do have some nice things and the Anniversary Sale is a great opportunity to invest in some Fall pieces at great prices.  But it requires heading to the actual store if you want a deal.

So these are few Nordstom Canada Sale picks that I actually found in store.  A couple things to note: 1) you can’t always find the things online in the stores in Canada and 2) the pricing online is often different in store.

I went to the Yorkdale store on early access day a couple days ago and here are some of the items I found. As you can see I was most excited by the shoes.  Although with an 11 month old in tow, I also didn’t have hours to browse the clothing section so its likely I may have passed over some nice things.  Either way its worth a trip to the store.

1. BP Motto Leggings.  $31.  I had been eyeing these leggings since last Winter so I was pleased to see they were part of the sale.  And I was even more pleased when I tried them on.  They fit awesome, similar to SPANX in terms of the rise, but not as much compression.  But still they do a great job at sucking it all in.  I would totally wear these postpartum. They are more olive green than the pic which makes then appear really brown.  They come in black too.

2. SPANX Faux Leather Leggings.  If you are in the market for some new faux leather leggings, the SPANX ones are awesome.  I got these last year at the Anni Sale and they were a lifesaver for me postpartum.  I forget the price I saw them at instore but I think they were less than $100.

3. Vince Camuto Slingbacks.  $120.  I also fell in love with these slingbacks.  They have such a cool retro feel.   I didn’t buy them because they were a little loose around the ankle on me for some reason but I have really narrow feet.

4. Louise Et Cie Leopard Bow Slides.  $120.  These mules were also so cute on.  I love the oversized bow.  If I had endless budget and more space in my shoe closet I would have brought these home as well.

5. Treasure And Bond White Studded Mules.  $99.  I can’t wait to wear these in the Fall with girlfriends jeans and a checked blazer.

6. Chuck Taylor Shoreline Sneakers.  $50.  Okay I totally didn’t need another pair of sneakers, but these were only $50 and the light blush colour is so cute.  So I had to. I didn’t see these online but they were in store.  No idea if they are still in store though.

7.  Vince Camuto Booties.  $145.  I came home with these booties.  Super comfortable  but now I am on the fence about whether to keep them or not.  I definitely need a pair brown booties BUT I have seen so many bloggers talk about these and I hate when I have the same stuff as everyone else.

$20 Strappy Midi Dress

Snapseed (7)

One of my absolute fav dresses to wear this summer has  been this strappy midi dress.  And it was only $20 on Amazon.  The buttons aren’t functional, but I am okay with that.  And for you breasfeeding moms, the straps are stretchy enough that you can just pull them down to feed your babe.  And it has pockets, one of my fav features.  Well aside from the fact that it’s only $20.

I added a belt to dress it up a little for my mini photo shoot with my little.  But it looks great without a belt and a fair of sandals or flats.

The dress also comes in over 20 other prints and colours.   I love the tropical print for Summer but I just ordered the green too.  I thought it would be great for the Fall with a cardi.   Some of my fav colours/prints are linked below.  But if you click through to the site you can see more.

BTW, I went with a medium so I would say it fits true to size.  Maybe size up if you are really busty.  Also the fabric is thin and unlined so if you get a white you might want to consider a light slip underneath.

Toddler Room Design

My little Ruby, who is almost 3, has the best room in the house.  Just before she was turned 2, her little bro arrived which meant she was being kicked out of the nursery and moved into a big girl room.  Which she didn’t mind at all.  And the transition to her new room and new bed was much easier than expected.

I didn’t really have a plan for how the room would unfold, I just knew I wanted a cute little house bed and a little canopy/tent to curl up in. Once I had a starting point, I slowly added things from there.  I love all the little special places in this room – the canopy tent to cuddle, the rocking chair to read and I loved how the DIY bookshelves and closet turned out.

More details with pics and links to shop below.  And linking my Pinterest board here  if you want more inspo.  And coming in a few weeks, I will share Leo’s black and white nursery.

House Bed.  DIY.  This was a pretty simple project.  The painting took some time or maybe it just felt that way because I was like 9 months pregnant.  Anyways, linking a DIY Tutorial here and there are lots of house beds for sale on Etsy as well.  Here is the link for one I thought was cute on Etsy and they can customize in terms of design, size and paint colour.

Ruffled Blackout Curtains.  Pottery Barn Kids | These don’t seem to be available in Canada anymore but they are still available on the US site so that is what I have linked.  I looked forever for these and they were all too sheer.  These were perfect for our floor to ceiling windows because they are blackout and I love the girly vibe.

LED Indoor Twinkle Lights.  Amazon | Not that you can see them in the pic, but we lined the top part of the bed frame with these twinkle lights. They run off a remote control and are perfect for story time.  They are also great for Christmas mantles or to add above a headboard for a little Christmas magic.

Artwork, Rug and Decor Items.  HomeSense | I love heading to HomeSense to pick up all the little decor things.  They have great artwork, lamps, pillows and wall hangings for kids there.

And if Ruby isn’t in her bed, she is curled up under this canopy.  You can also hang this above the top of the bed and use it as a canopy for the bed.

Canopy.  Amazon | This is only $50.  We added twinkle lights we found on Amazon on the inside too.  These are smaller and were perfect for the small canopy.  I also used them to add to some of my indoor wreaths at Christmas.  Some of the sets, there are 6 in the pack, needed the battery replaced soon after we put them up but other than that they were a great buy.

Nest Cam. Amazon| We have used Nest as a baby monitor for both our kids and we love it.  You can see your babes from any device from location (we love spying on them when we aren’t home) and you get alerts when there is movement.  And now that we have two its nice because I can see both of them on screen at the same time.

My last project in this room was to create a space for books. There wasn’t space in the room for a piece of furniture so I love how these wall shelves perfectly filled this empty space between the door opening and the closet.  I found this idea on Pinterest and they are just $10 IKEA picture ledges.  You can fit about three books across and 3 deep on each shelf so most of our collection fits. I used the 55 cm long shelves but they also come in 115cm if you want something longer.  It would actually look cute to combine both lengths if you have the space.

Cradle was made by Opa/Grandma and the rocking chair was from my childhood, I just added a fresh coat of white spray paint (or 4 coats rather,

Next week I will share Leo’s black and white nursery, so be sure to sign up for email alerts if you want to be notified when that post is live.  You can sign up at the very top of the site.

Summer Basics For Your Little Lady

If you are looking to top up your little lady’s closet with a few more basics, then this post is for you.  If you haven’t read my post about creating  basics wardrobe your your little, then head here.  But essentially its all about starting with basics that work together.  Choosing a similar colour palette really helps with this.  You can see the theme in Ruby’s closet is pink and grey with a little blue.

Here are the basics I have used in Ruby’s wardrobe.  Most of these she has and wears but a few are look alikes (where noted) because sizes seem to sell out so fast at The Gap/Old Navy.

And if you need some basics for your little man, check out this post including 10 mix and match summer basics from Gap/OldNavy.

1. Dotted T-Shirt Dress. The Gap | This T-shirt dress is on sale for $10 right now.  Yes its white and maybe not the most practical but it’s too cute.  Plus there is nothing oxy-clean won’t get out.

2. Blue Ruffle Sleeve Tee. The Gap | I love ruffle sleeve tees, they add a little something extra to a basic tee and they look really cute under overalls.

3. Blue Stripe Bubble Shorts.  The Gap.  These are on sale for $12.  We have these in a pink plaid and they fit really cute.  Also its one of those piece that are wearable for daycare but can be dressed up for a visit with the grammies too.

4.  Grey Ruffle Sleeve Tee With Wolf Graphic. The Gap | Love the little wolf graphic on this.  Only $12 with 50% off discount.

5. Pink Ruffle Hem Shorts.  The Gap | Love these too.  We don’t have them yet, but they are in my shopping cart.  And they are on sale for $13.

9. Pom Pom Sandals.  The Gap | On sale for only $15.  Not for everyday wear but these are the cutest.  Ruby also has a wide foot and these actually fit her.

10.  Pink Chuck Taylors. Foot Locker | Ruby lives in these.  They are great for playing, super cute and washable.  If you sign up to VIP (email) at footlocker they will give you a $10 off coupon for a purchase of $50+.

11. Pink Denim Overalls.  The Gap | These are under $20 with discount code. The straps aren’t adjustable so you will want to size up.  Ruby usually a 2T and we ordered a 4T and they fit perfect.

12. Denim Overalls.  The Gap | These are a classic and the straps are adjustable so these should fit for a couple seasons.  I like to roll the cuff up on these and pair them with a girly ruffle sleeve tee. Around $20 with a discount code but there are only smaller sizes left.

13. Grey Peplum Tank.  The Gap.  On sale for only $7 and it comes in a few colours.  I love grey because it works with everything, especially pink, there is alot of pink in Ruby’s closet.

14. Grey Dotted Tank. The Gap | I love this shape for a tank because it still covers her shoulders.  And this is on sale for $8.

15. Coral Button Tie Tank.  Old Navy | I love these little tie front tanks with a pair of cut-offs.  It comes in a beautiful mint green as well.

Summer Basics For Your Little Man

I love buying clothes for my kids – an almost  3 year old girl, Ruby and almost 1 year old boy, Leo.  And yes, buying for Ruby is a little more fun, obviously.  But by the time my second came around my shopping habits had evolved.  And I got a little bit smarter.

It sort of happened by accident to be honest.  As my first went off to daycare, I wanted things she could wear that she could play in and spill on while still looking fashionable.  So I ended up building her a basics wardrobe and then we added some more special pieces for weekends.  It seems pretty obvious now as I write but it was such a different approach to shopping for me.  I used to buy pretty much everything that was cute and on sale but many things were barely worn.  I guess there are only so many shirtdresses, skinny jeans and strappy sandals a baby needs…..

Anyhow, the idea of a basics wardrobe is an approach I have started taking with both my kids and its  also something I am trying to do with my own wardrobe (struggling a bit with myself).

Lets start with boys because shopping for boys is always a little bit harder.  Especially since everything has dinosaurs and fire trucks and that’s just not our thing (at least for now when he doesn’t have an opinion on the matter).  Seriously why do all boys clothes have dinosaurs on them!!!

Here are some of the basics that I have used to build Leo’s wardrobe.  Everything is from The Gap or Old Navy.  I only buy when things when I have a discount code so watch your emails – usually 40% at The Gap, once in a while 50% (in fact right now The Gap is 50% off).  When buying I try to buy things that I can mix and match with the other items in his closet.  Sticking to a similar colour palette makes this easy.  We like greys and blues.   I also like fabrics that will wash well and have some stretch to them so they will last more than a couple months.

Stay tuned for a separate post on girls shortly.

summer basics for your little

1. Striped Pocket Tee.  The Gap | A basic striped tee works with pretty much everything. We don’t have this tee buts its in my cart and waiting for it to go on sale.

2.  Striped Tank. Old Navy | My little guy is sweaty, so sweaty, so I bought this tank moreso for the practicality of it.  But it actually looks super cute with these camo shorts.   It comes in a  bunch of other colours and its like $4 on sale.

3. Long Sleeve Raglan Tee.  The Gap | Leo had these in a few colours.  They are great for cooler days in the summer and will take your little right through winter.  These are also on sale for like $10 right now.

4.  Basic Blue Button Tee.  Old Navy.  This is also a fav at our house because it works with everything.  And its on sale right now for less than $10.

5. Tropical Print Tee. Old Navy | This is one of our favourites, its such a soft fabric and a  vneck is the cutest on a squishy little guy.   It comes in a few other patterns, but this one is the only one we really liked.

6. Cuffed Terry Shorts. Old Navy | Leo wears these all the time.   They come down just below the knee and are cuffed so they are perfect for a crawler.  They also come in a light grey stripes and are less than $10.

7. Camo Pocket Shorts.  The Gap | We have a few of these pairs of shorts.  And we have the pant version as well and the knit fabric is are knit so super comfortable.  And I love me some camo. They are a little less than $10 with a sale code.

8. Plaid Roll Cuff Shorts. The Gap | We don’t have these but have a similar pair of cuffed shorts.  These also come in lots of different colours but I like the blue because it goes with so many of the shirts we have – alot of blue.  These would also be cute dressed up with a pair of suspenders and a white button up shirt.

9. Red Dino Shorts.  The Gap | I know I said I wasn’t into dinosaurs, but for some reason I am okay with this print.  I think because its a more grown up fabric and the print is subtle – I don’t know – but I love these.

10. Distressed Denim.  Old Navy | I ordered an 18-24 and they fit just perfect – my guy is 11 months and 25 pounds.  Distressed skinny jeans on babies isn’t super practical, I know, but they are so cute.  And the distressing is ‘repaired’ which is functional for crawlers.  Cant wait for Fall for Leo to rock these with his kicks when the days get a little cooler.

Mini Makeover – Master Bedroom Edition

Master BedRoom - Pom Pom Duvet
bedroom original

My husband and I spent 5 years renovating our home, it was a long 5 years.  Its true what they say, renovating with your spouse is intense.  But we made it through and we love our house.  There is definitely something to be said about doing the work yourself.  Painful as it is, you take so much pride in knowing that you painted those walls, you laid those tiles and you sanded that drywall over and over and over and over.

We have been done for about 4 years and yikes, I am starting to feel the itch to start making updates already.  But now that we have two small children, we just don’t have the time (or money) to make big updates to our house (plus my husband would kill me if I even suggested it).  However, you can still make small changes that have a really big impact.  So my plan is to make small updates throughout the house, mini makeovers if you will, to satisfy my urge to decorate.  And I am starting with our bedroom.

With our bedroom, it was a simple as a new duvet.  We’ve had the same grey and white striped duvet for a few years and I was tired of it. I also felt it was a little too dark and I wanted to brighten things up.  See the before pic above.  At the time I was on a sequin kick – terrible pillow decision.

I looked through alot of duvets before I landed on this one.  I knew I wanted something white with some texture.  And I didn’t want to spend much more than $100.  Believe it or not, I had a hard time finding ones I liked.  Everything was either too simple or too fussy/detailed. I finally found this white pom pom fringe duvet on Amazon and it has made such a difference.

Here are the details on the duvet cover we ended up with as well as those that made the shortlist.

Pom Fringe Duvet Cover. Amazon.ca | Ultimately I landed on this because I love pom poms.  I felt it added a bit of whimsy to a very neutral space.  Although I will definitely have to be careful washing.  All the reviews said to turn it inside out and use the delicate cycle to reduce pom pom loss.  And there are matching pillow shams too. The duvet isn’t quite as white as it appears in the top picture.  Its more off white as pictured below.

pom-fringe-duvet.jpg      pom fringe pillows amazon

Textured Duvet.  Structube | This was my back up if I didn’t go with the pom poms.   I love the texture on this but its still so simple. And its less than $100.

structube-duvet.jpg      structube-duvet-2.jpg

Black and White Tassel Duvet Cover and Shams.  Urban Outfitters | I love how sleek the contrasting fringe is on this set.

Urban Outfitter black and white tassel duvet cover     Urban Outfitters Tassel Divet Cover 2

And the Urban Outfitters tassel duvet comes in a ton of colous.  But I love it in the classic white.

Tufted Duvet Cover.  Urban Outfitters.  I like how the tufting is used as an accent at the bottom of this duvet cover.

Urban Outfitter tufted duvet cover 1

Stay tuned for more mini makeovers.  I think the dining room is next on my list.
