Not Your Average Button Up

Easy button ups are a key piece in every wardrobe.  They are great year round, especially for layering, but I really love them for Spring.  They are crisp, comfortable and they go with pretty much everything.  And nursing friendly of course.

This Spring I have been leaning towards the classic blue and white striped button up.  But today’s button ups are far from boring.  Whether its embellished, oversized, cropped or off the shoulder, I find myself reaching for my button ups ALL the time.

I have included below a few of my favourite button ups below as well as a few styling tips. I also love looking at Winners for button ups, they typically have a great selection of button ups.

1.Ruffles and Frills

I love a good ruffle, I mean I named my blog rufflesandrubies after all.  A simple ruffle adds such a fun feminine look to a basic button up.  Frills and ruffles work best with something a little less feminine on the bottom like distressed denim.

I found this button up at The Bay and it is less than $50.

2.Florals

Florals and stripes work so well together.  The pink/red embroidered florals on these shirts are so pretty.   I have a shirt very similar to the one on the right that I picked up at Winners and I love wearing it with my mid leather wrap skirt and my leather shorts.  There is something about florals and leather that feels so right.

3.Cropped

A cropped style is a more trendy approach to the button up.  And while it may not go with everything in your closet, it sure looks great with a pair of high waisted girlfriend jeans.  I like a looser fitted denim when wearing a cropped top.

This cropped shirt is from Zara and its only $40.  It also has cute ruffle detailing on the top of the sleeves.

4.Oversized

An oversized button up can be styled so many ways.  Of course on its own with cut offs or skinny jeans but I also love to wear oversized shirts as dresses.  Typically I throw on a pair of denim cut offs underneath because kids (mama needs to bend over without worrying about her outfit). An oversized button up is also great as an extra layer worn open for those cooler evenings over a tank/tee.

5. Off the shoulder

I love the look of off the shoulder shirts but to be honest I don’t wear many because strapless bras just aren’t for me.  But for those of you can rock them (so jealous),  I wanted to share this because its on sale and so cute.

6. Colour

And of course it you want a little more colour,  try the basic button up in a pink or red. I personally wouldn’t wear it with white – it feels a little candy striper to me – but it would look great with grey or blue denim. I also love the sleeve detailing on this one.  And its only $40!
